LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Lakers have narrowed down the field of candidates they will consider hiring to replace Phil Jackson and have former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown at the top of their list, according to sources with knowledge of the team's thinking.
Lakers owner Jerry Buss said in an interview Tuesday with Sirius XM Radio that the team was "very close" to filling its coaching vacancy.
Yahoo! Sports subsequently reported that the Lakers had entered into "serious discussions" with Brown, who has been working as an analyst for ESPN since his dismissal by the Cavaliers after last season's second-round exit.
ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard reported Tuesday night that Brown and the Lakers have already exchanged contract figures, with a deal potentially being struck as early as Wednesday. But sources also told Broussard that a deal between the Lakers and the 2008-09 NBA Coach of the Year could collapse if Brown does not get enough security -- in terms of years and money -- to sufficiently empower him as coach.
ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher reports that former Houston Rockets coach Rick Adelman appeared to the Lakers' frontrunner because of his experience and deft touch with veterans. But Brown had a strong face-to-face interview with the Lakers to impact the pecking order, Bucher reports.
In the event that the Lakers and Brown fail to reach an agreement, sources say L.A. is expected to turn to Adelman. While popular with current players, most notably Kobe Bryant, Shaw appears to have slipped to third at best in the Lakers' pecking order, with L.A. increasingly determined to hire a veteran coach to replace Jackson and his NBA record 11 championships as a coach.
I would be running around shouting "how bout dem Mavs?!?!?!" right now but I already did that 5 years ago. I'm extremely excited, but I know there is one more series to go.
