Yeah i understand where people are coming from when they complain about how shallow lyrics can be in a lot of popular hip hop but what ppl don't get is its lyrics isn't the whole package now. These rappers are artists, not just rappers. It's about the sound or the vibe as much as it is just what they're saying. And they care about image because aesthetic is a large part of art.
I think that's a copout. Plain and simple.
If you don't have shit to say, put the mic down. I don't have any interest in corny fags talking about their clothes
Rock/metal certainly aren't the cash cow thy once were but it won't die. There are still young rock bands coming out garnering followings. Nothing is probably the most successful young band in shoegaze right now and they're on a metal label. Deafheaven are playing everything from Pitchfork fest to hard rock festivals sponsored by energy drinks. You may be right that rock bands won't be able to reach the level of success rappers & EDM artists can now for very much longer, but there's still a large audience for it.
Shoegaze is a 30 year old genre that's already seen it's heyday though. See my point?
People are starting to pick the 90's apart for the little quirks that they don't think anyone remembers so they can plunder them. It's nothing new to me. I don't even hear bands putting much new spin on shit anymore.
And I'm not lamenting. I see this as a natural progression. I'm actually kinda cool with it. I'd rather hear new sounds than the same shit reorganized over and over. I get excited when I hear someone doing something cool and original, regardless of genre
i can see your point. It's easy for me to get into newer rock bands using 90's techniques because I wasn't there the first time. At some point it's all been done before, so if somebody is doing something well with a slight new twist, I'm for it
I guess we just disagree on hip-hop front then. I liken what's happening right now I'm hip hop to what was going on with classical music in 20th century. when you've seemingly exhausted what you can do with lyricism and wordplay (the same way classical music exhausted Tonality), you start to explore all the other aspects of music and bring it into your sound.
Satan I hate to say it but your opinions on hip-hop are grandpa
I swear. Typical dusty ass old school Hip Hop head. The Hip Hop equivalent of "trve Metal fans". That's why I learned to let it go in one ear and out the other. Hip Hop sonically is better than it's ever been. I don't even like old school shit. It sounds too dated at this point.
Your ad hominem insults don't mean shit to me, but I can agree about the beats. That's the best thing about most hip hop now. Some Old School stuff doesn't hold up. I can't listen to almost anything from the 80's now unless I'm in a goofy mood. The stuff I hate is what happened between Puffy and 50 Cent. That was a fucking awful moment for rap music. The biggest problem now is that so many talented producers will work with anyone that pays them, regardless of how bullshit they are.

THANK YOU. And me personally, I don't give a fuck what's bein said as much as I care bout HOW it's bein said. I have a producer's ear and only care about the whole atmosphere, aesthetic, and vibe. One of my favorite songs right now is a leaked Weeknd demo that literally has no lyrics. He's jus mumbling cold ass melodies.
At that, I don't see why Hip Hop haters, especially the Metal community, constantly criticize "shallow" lyrics. As if 99% of Death and Black Metal lyrics are any more substantial. I already know the world is shit, I don't need conscious Rap as a constant reminder. At the end of the day, music is ENTERTAINMENT and we listen to it to have fun and feel good. And when I listen to a brag track it jus puts me in a good mood and makes me feel like the man. Eminem talkin bout blowin his brains out does the complete opposite. It's funny when someone says "Oh he only raps bout money drugs and bitches, he has no talent.", what if he doesn't WANT to rap about serious shit and jus wants to have fun and put on a show? That's the case wit my own music. I can make music bout serious issues if I really want to, and I used to when I was depressed and hated life, but I have absolutely no interest. I have so much fun makin what I do.
There's also the fact I'm 20 years old, I'm still havin fun. I actually DO drugs and bitches, so it resonates more wit me over Kendrick talking bout political shit and racism, even if he is discussin more important issues. Which is the case wit a lot of kids. When did music have to have a message? As I said it's entertainment and there's a platform for every kind of it. You would't criticize a comedy movie for not bein serious and/or say it's inferior to a drama movie simply cause it's not meaningful right? Of course not cause at the end of the day you were still entertained. Exact same thing.
I've only listened to his album Say It Loud. I honestly have no idea what the rest of his music sounds like. He crushes iton sax though. Blew me away when I realized he was the one actually playing sax.

Speakin of sax in EDM, have you heard Big Gigantic? They're my favorite EDM outfit and live they're completely different than the rest of the game. Got a live drummer and saxophonist rather than a dude behind a laptop.
Music isn't just entertainment tho that's the thing. Ppl like Satan get upset because music is more than entertainment to them. Some people believe that the arts have a role in society to be critical of what's happening in the world around it and contribute something meaningful and not just aesthetically pleasing. That's a perfectly fine way to look at music too. There's no one right way to do it. Art can and should be meaningful and art can and should provide escape from the confines of this shit show we call life. It can be everything and none of it at once.

Yes but I'm the same. Music is my complete life obviously. It's so much more than entertainment to me. It's my complete way of life. But yet I'm still not a stickler bout what it "should" be. The thing about art is it can be anything it wants to be. And a serious or non-serious form doesn't make either the superior version.
At that, what about instrumental music that has absolutely no message whatsoever? Vocals are jus another instrument in the mix, it doesn't matter what's bein said as long as that instrument sounds good jus like the others. Music and it's message have an extreme influence in society, there's no denyin that. But music and it's artists still have no other responsibility other than entertaining.
I never said anything about having a "message" though. I like stuff like Ol' Dirty Bastard. A lot. But a lot of these "rappers" lack humor and charisma as well, never mind skills. I don't know why anyone wants to listen to some dumbass talking over a track...which I hear way too often. IMO, people just like it because the beats are rough and tasty bitches shake their asses to it. So they feel the need to defend it so they can look cool. I don't care. I'll grandpa all day before I fake how I feel about something. Honestly, a lot of popular hip hop right now does nothing but remind me of people like Jersey Shore. That's the "atmosphere" I get off it.
And to the image thing: Yeah, I usually like to listen to music not having any idea what the artist looks like. It actually sucks when I dig something and then find out that they're a cheesy looking dickhead. I get caught off guard by that sometimes
Why do you as a man give a single fuck what the artist looks like? Cmon now smh. Somethin bout Lil Uzi Vert's face literally annoys the shit outta me but he's still one of my favorite artists right now cause his product is all that matters. That's some female shit.
artists have no responsibility to make anything other than what they want to make, which means that the art they make doesn't even have to be entertaining. But yeah overall I agree with what you're saying.

Beyond this, I think some music is actually damaging to people. I don't really blame people for it, really. I blame media. The way corporate garbage is shoveled down peoples throats bugs me. I specifically think the checklist rappers are really bad for society. I mean...there's whole generation of kids hitting adulthood now that think it's okay to act like that because they've heard that bullshit their entire lives. People get held down by being tricked like that. When you actually grow up, it's not cool at all to be in debt up to your eyeballs because you wasted your money on clothes or a car or passing out shots at da club. That shit keeps you poor. That's why most of the rappers that espouse that shit are broke and forgotten 5 years after their hit record. Soulja Boy lives in my friend's neighborhood and they clown on him all the time because he's always got the repo man at his house taking away another car. You got a whole generation of young dudes with fucked up legal situations because they're actively trying to be some mob boss even though they grew up in the burbs. Trying to live out the garbage they heard on a song made by some guy that's not really gangsta in the first place. You got 13 year old girls posting their twerk videos on youtube, ending up pregnant with 5 different dudes like it's nothing cuz being ratchet is funny now. Then there's the plastic surgery culture that's feasting off girls wanting to be Nikki Minaj. And the worst part is that the origins of the art form came from artistically inclined street youths. You watch old hip hop movies like 'Wild Style' and the rappers are dorks that just happen to live in the projects. They talked about guns and drugs because they grew up around them, not to brag but to detail what they saw day to day. 'The Message' was one of the biggest hip hop songs of the 80's and it was nothing but Flash talking about how shitty it was to live in the hood. It wasn't until the mid 90's that the gangsta culture got really pushed by record labels and that's really the point when groups like Public Enemy became passe. I love gangsta rap, but I like it more as a piece of a broader pie. That language got really commercialized though, and now it's lexicon and the old way is endangered species. I wouldn't mind so much if it was organic, but that's not really what happened. Labels like Interscope realized they could make more money off controversy than talent, so that's what they promoted. I cringe when I hear people call Tupac the GOAT. He wasn't even top 10 of his era. But he was controversial. His song titles ended up adorning the front windshield or shitty jail tat of every greasy douchebag I grew up with. Then the same label has Eminem boasting about taking stupid amounts of drugs and beating on girls (plus he was white, so this philosophy hits a broader market). Then they got 50 making people think it's cool to get shot. That's no accident. I've read before that the Prison building industry would have conferences with Rap label heads in the early 90's trying to encourage them to promote gangsta rap, so more kids would end up in jail. That's fucked up. And it's sad that an entire generation later I'm still seeing people get caught up in it and fucking their lives up. Especially when there used to be so much more to the art
Satan what rappers lack humor and charisma? That's all i see in the kind of rappers you're criticizing lol.
Ugh. Honestly, most of the rappers from around here. It sucks because Outkast broke Atlanta, but a lot of the other shit that comes from here is awful. I can't stand Future...Young Thug... Two Chains...I tried. Especially with Future and Young Thug. I don't see why they get their dick sucked so much by shit like Noisey. It's hard for me to find good stuff because the bar has been lowered so far that people jizz over garbage. I have one friend that keeps me up on good stuff and the rest is mostly trial and error. There's more, but I forget their names
Why do you as a man give a single fuck what the artist looks like? Cmon now smh. Somethin bout Lil Uzi Vert's face literally annoys the shit outta me but he's still one of my favorite artists right now cause his product is all that matters. That's some female shit.
Jeez you're dense. My entire point was that I don't really care what people look like. Great job!
