What you said makes a lot of sense, however it is flat out wrong. Anyone here on MU that is a member of BTN for example, would easily tell you that BTN has the largest, highest quality selection of TV shows around. I invited a lot of people to this site, which is now shut down for invites and virtually impossible to get in. There isnt a single site that comes close to BTN in number of content, quality of content, and dl times. I have sites for other content as well, music, movies, etc.
The thing that you fail to realize is that these small communities (which are still 30k large), have a large dedicated user-base of dedicated fans who are adding new content and seeding old content. They Are experts in their media, and go though pain staking effort to get quality content to the site so they can improve their reputation. These sites don't suffer from bad uploads because people are always trying to upload the best quality content. You dont need to worry about virus, or bad content, because it just doesn't exist. Note - Yes sometimes people will upload cams or screeners before the actual release and those are less in quality. But they are obviously marked and when the retail source is released then people quickly replace the subpar initial upload.
Private trackers are 100% better than open trackers. The quality is always top notch, and there is less of a chance of the RIAA/MPAA/etc sending you letters. The more exclusive and hard to get into, the better. Demonoid was a semi-private tracker in that you had to sign up but they had open signups like 50% of the time. Fuck that. The sites I am talking about is for friends of friends, and never went though open public signups.

It's not a secret. It's on google and torrentfreak, and torrent-invites, etc. It's well documented on torrentfreak in fact. All trackers are, even the most exclusive. It's just incredibly hard to get in, and there are much bigger targets to go after (kickass, bay, etc). Plus on the open sites, people don't know how to hide their tracks, and admins arent looking for RIAA/MPAA/etc. On these sites they are actively looking for anyone who might be a wolf in sheeps clothing.
Well I did. 0 viruses I should add. Open sites have established uploaders that you don't have to worry about. I've been downloading from the same people for years
