Besides donation, I don't see what more there is to do. If I can't get a job in the coming weeks, I'll certainly go there to try and help out in whatever way I can.

"why is this shit taking so long?"

There was a big fire at an oil well in the Gulf, because a part of the drill machinery broke. Now, there's basically a hole in the earth feeding down into the oil chamber, with mind boggling pressure sending it up. It's tough to combat that pressure.

Because they clearly weren't prepared for this.......and now it's turned into an engineering nightmare trying to stop it. I sure as hell wouldn't want to have to figure it out.

Well, now it appears as if the federal government knew how severe the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was worse than they let on even in the very early stages of the spill. The government did not let the public know just how bad the spill was early on.

The Coast Guard and other agencies were able to see the BP video of the oil spill from the source. However, they did not make BP make the video public. They also never even told us about the magnitude of the oil leak gushing into the Gulf.

The Center for Public Integrity even reports that the US Coast Guard was aware almost immediately on April 20 that the spill was likely going to be the worst spill in US history. The public had not even been made aware of the leak in the first days after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded.

In fact, logs from the Coast Guard even show on April 23 that the blowout might cause 64,000 to 110,000 barrels each day. However, the government did not make the public aware of the potential impact of the disaster to the Gulf Coast.

There is speculation that low balling the estimate on the part of BP may have saved the company $15 million per day because the fine is $1000 per barrel per day. However, why did the federal government keep this news to themselves?

^that doesn't really help but still we need to start using alternate fuel and energy sources

this was too bianca about killing the bp dudes

After spending 12 hours freeing their stuck diamond blade saw, BP is on to plan ‘b’ for the cut-and-cap procedure in the Gulf of Mexico. Now, BP is using a pair of giant shears to cut through the pipe.

In good news about the shears, they have also been used to slice of part of the riser. It just may work to slice the pipe. We’ll obviously have to wait and see, which is what we’ve all been doing since this thing started so long ago.

Unfortunately, workers were not able to completely link together the booms that are supposed to try to protect the beautiful white sand beaches in Florida. They were stymied by storms, but the weather cleared later. Forecasters predict that the oil will reach the shores some time on Friday.

Thank goodness the White House has approved 5 sand berms for Louisiana. The berms will be paid for by BP. There will be a total of 6 sand berms to protect Louisiana. That is positive news I suppose.

Also, there is a possibility that BP will pay their shareholder dividends in the amount of $10 billion despite two Democrats in Congress who asked them not to. BP made no comment regarding the dividends. However, there seems to be some growing concern over whether or not BP will be able to actually pay for the cleanup.

There is a push to stop the tax breaks for big oil as well. Barack Obama has declared that the US must not rely soley on fossil fuels any more to fill the energy demand. That is true, and I hope the actions follow the words at least in terms of funding sustainable forms of energy.

Some people would love to have their lives back. Of course, nobody appreciated hearing BP CEO Tony Hayward say that he wants ‘my life back’, and Hayward has acknowledged how hurtful his thoughtless comment was. He probably does want his life back, but now is the time to keep that information to yourself. The entire Gulf Coast wants its life back.

Will the shears work? I sure hope so. For now, I’ll sit and wait with all of you to see what happens. At least August will eventually get here, and maybe then the flow will be stopped by the relief well. Until then, I hope the CEO keeps his mouth shut about his life, Barack Obama really does push for some sustainable energy sources, and BP has enough money to pay to clean this thing up! Plus, hooray for sand berms!

I have a moral dilemma about how I view this. Because I am an environmentalist, and it enrages me that things like this can happen, but this could be the start of a huge step forward for alternative fuels. I mean, one of the largest oil companies in the world creates one of the largest environmental disasters in history. That'll have an effect upon the fuel industry's future for sure.

Also, JL, you need to mind your sources, that is incredibly impartial.

The Oil companies own too much of Washington for a push towards alternative fuels to succeed. The government just puts so much red tape with any new, promising, proposal... that it just ends up costing too much to continue on with the research.

Oil is the way of the past... we've already gone past coal, oil is no different.

IMO... Humanity deserves to die if within my lifetime we dont manage to take advantage of the INFINITE energy provided by the sun.
