I guess he feels obliged to come back and repay the fans that bought tickets. And they are decent high value tickets so 1. They dont want to refund all that money and 2. Punters want to keep their highly sought after seats/tickets

Could be worse. You could have drove 2 hours to a venue tripping on peyote, only to have them cancel the show right when you pull up, then only get half your money back for your ticket.
