MILLBURY, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say tornados and thunderstorms that swept through the Midwest overnight killed at least five people in Ohio, destroyed 50 homes and damaged a high school gymnasium where graduation was to be held Sunday.
Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn in northwest Ohio says that among those killed were a person outside the heavily damaged Lake Township police department and a motorist on state Route 795.
Fire Chief Todd Walters of Lake Township says several people were taken to hospitals. Authorities are still searching through homes and Walters couldn't say whether anyone is missing.
The roof and a back wall were torn off the Lake High School gymnasium and buses were flipped and one was tossed across a school parking lot.

Lake Township Police Chief Mark Hummer says three people are confirmed dead in Lake Township. He was up in helicopter -- says the tornado's path was 7-miles long, 100 yards wide. It moved northeast across the township, destroying 50 homes and damaging 50.
A female was reportedly seeking shelter on foot near the Lake Township Police Department when she was killed.
The Lake Township Police Department also sustained severe damage. The administration building is destroyed as well as police vehicles, according to Hummer. Residents with an emergency should still call 911, and the call will be routed to neighboring law enforcement departments.
Lake High School suffered severe damage to the building and has already postponed the graduation ceremony scheduled for Sunday
At around 12 we were told that there was a storm on its way from Chicago that would be even more powerful and cause a lot more damage.. Come 3:45 the storm passed and all we got was rain.
My middle school caught fire when a boiler exploded...burned down a whole building.
Saved my ass too; because it was science fair week, and i hadn't done one. But the Cafeteria was where all the boards were being held; and they all burned. (we weren't graded on it that year)
