It could be worse for MDF. They could've turned into one of these other fests that eschew their base and start becoming pop fests like Coachella or Bonnaroo did. It would be a radical move for such a fest, but they've definitely had the chance to at least move up in the pop metal pecking order and headline someone like Ghost or Lamb of God by now. I think MDF gets made to look a little stagnant because Psycho is around now and Psycho likes to include bands that exist outside of metal but still influence metal artists.
MDF 2013 was one of the greatest lineups ever assembled. They could've easily took that momentum and tried to land someone big the next year. I know a lot of people figured after having Down and Exodus on that one would lead to something like that, but it never really happened. The biggest acts on 2014 were prolly At the Gates and Crowbar. They've managed to exist on a certain level of relevance that I'd imagine the promoters are comfortable with
This is going to be my first time at MDF and I'm still extremely excited. The lineup has already introduced me to several bands that I wouldn't have normally found out about so I'm thankful for that.
