I've come upon them recently on Pandora.... i've always kept myself from checking them out because of the whole Valfar thing. (This band is Windir - Valfar)
Jorm, though i believe you are well informed in metal and might know of some real good bands that i would just flat out ignore because of the genre, I have listened to burzum and it is noise. sorry for the truth but people, imo, who like this kind of music seem to be just trying to prove to themselves that they can listen to something that no one else finds enjoyable and like it. this makes them look at this band in high regard because they want to be unique and think that they see something that others dont when in reality, its still just noise.........sorry but this is how i feel
I can honestly tell you that I've never thought anything like that while listening to Burzum. Burzum was one of the black metal bands I didn't listen until late after I began listening to the genre. I started with Sons of Northern Darkness by Immortal, because I didn't really like any low production stuff back then. Eventually I gained an appreciation for the atmosphere the proper production could bring and started listening to Battles in the North, Sventiveth by Behemoth, and some Mayhem. I suppose it's best to listen to lofi stuff in quiet when you can fully hear everything that goes on. I've always judges music by overall songwriting, and the feeling it gives. To me, the raw production sounds good (however, there is of course a point where it gets a bit too much, i.e. Walknut, some early Niflheim), because it creates an atmosphere, which gives a better feeling to the music. So that is why most black metal fans enjoy a "gr1m" production sound. Not because we are trying to be rebellious elitist. The production should fit the music.
On a related side note, I have nothing better to do when I'm sick than watch lotr and talk music on the internet.
