Yankees Fans Spit on Cliff Lee's Wife, She May Prefer Texas...
From the department of "Philly Fans Aren't The Worst People on Earth," comes this little nugget.
Cliff Lee, who would probably still like to return to Philly if we could afford him, might think twice about signing with the Yankees. His wife seems to like Texas... and she was spit on by Yankees fans.
“That’s the greatest thing, being so close to home . . . Cliff can fit in anywhere, but it makes my life a lot easier. We’ve never had a short commute before. Having a direct flight from Little Rock is great . . .”
. . . Perhaps the Rangers’ greatest sales pitch simply was having Kristen sit in the visiting family section at Yankee Stadium during the playoffs. She says there were ugly taunts. Obscenities. Cups of beer thrown. Even fans spitting from the section above.
“The fans did not do good things in my heart,” Kristen says.
“When people are staring at you, and saying horrible things, it’s hard not to take it personal.”
You know how this story would have played out if it happened in Philly.
I hope Lee doesn't go to NYY. Fuck that, anywhere but there, he's too good to sellout like that... I'd rather him play for a team in the Phillies own division then the yankees. All that is good in baseball will suck if Cliff Lee signs with NYY. FUCK THE YANKEES!
I'd be pissed too if he signed in the Phils division, to be honest, I want him to stay in the american league far away from the Phillies cause you know as soon as he gets his chance, he's gonna carve them up for letting him go. with that said, still anybody but the yankees...
"3:02pm: Lee's agent Darek Braunecker told ESPN's Andrew Marchand, "The story is not an issue to us. Her experience in New York is certainly a non-issue. She enjoys New York as much as anyone enjoys New York."
10:01am: Two years ago, C.C. Sabathia's wife Amber was said to prefer the Giants. Yankees GM Brian Cashman was able to pitch the couple on New York and close the deal on a seven-year, $161MM contract. He may have a tougher task with Cliff Lee's wife Kristen, who did not have a good time at Yankee Stadium during the playoffs. From USA Today's Bob Nightengale:
Perhaps the Rangers' greatest sales pitch simply was having Kristen sit in the visiting family section at Yankee Stadium during the playoffs. She says there were ugly taunts. Obscenities. Cups of beer thrown. Even fans spitting from the section above. "The fans did not do good things in my heart," Kristen says. It's impossible to say how Kristen Lee's experience will factor into the lefty's decision. As Nightengale notes, Sabathia and A.J. Burnett (and perhaps their wives) are ready to recruit Lee this offseason. Plus, it's unlikely Yankees fans would taunt their own star pitcher's wife.
The Yankees' main selling point, of course, will have to be money and contract years. The Rangers have all the intangibles in their favor, especially the team's World Series appearance and proximity to the Lee family's Little Rock, Arkansas home. We've seen players leave millions on the table before, though the Rangers plan to be aggressive in the bidding."
I predict Lee stays with the Rangers. He's got more class then to just sellout and sign with the yankees. it would be a sad day for baseball if a player like Lee goes to NY. The only thing NY has in their favor is the fact that Lee and CC are friends. But I still believe Lee stays with Texas for bigg $$$$$
Also, here is this on what Lee had to say about the Incident.
"There has been speculation in the last news cycle that the Yankees, considered the front-runner in the soon-to-be war to land Lee in free agency, may have had that leadership position compromised by the spitting incident.
Clearly Kristen Lee was unsettled and unhappy by the way the Rangers were treated in Yankee Stadium. Lee said that wouldn't be the case with him, or at least he was smart enough to say that it wouldn't make a difference.
"I don't know the guy that did it," Lee said. "It could be anyone. Who knows? Who cares? They're at home right now."
"I pulled for a lot of those guys, but it's weird. When a team gets rid of you, you kind of like seeing them lose a little bit." -- Cliff Lee on the Phillies' elimination That last line got the World Series media corps laughing. Lee made it clear he didn't like what had happened, but said he could separate out individual acts by random fans from an organization that undoubtedly will be trying to recruit him.
"I brush that off as fans being fans," Lee said. "You can't control 50,000 people and what they're going to do. There were some people that were spitting off the balcony on the family section, and that's kind of weak, but what can you do?
"Some people get a little alcohol in them and act inappropriate. But it is what it is. There's so many people there you can't control them all. I know it's been made into a big deal, but that's really all it is, just two or three or four people just acting like fools. (As for the other) 50,000, you can't group them all together."

After about 20, I'd do what I love with the team I love as opposed to just play for the highest bidder.
But that's just me.
