He traded away pretty much our entire farm system for basically nothing
He only got Miguel Cabrera, Anibal Sanchez, Doug Fister, David Price, and more for farm players, most of which never worked out after they were traded away. It's not like he didn't try to address the bullpen, none of them just ever worked out. Valverde was successful here for a while, Benoit was really good here, and Nathan had been good at every place he'd been before Detroit. The only thing he's done recently that I didn't like was the Verlander contract that he gave him a year too early. His strengths greatly outnumber his weaknesses. On top of that he just acquired three young pitchers who could be a part of our rotation for years to come. He's one of the best in the business and I can't understand why Ilitch would think Avila gives him a better chance to win a World Series next year.
2. he tried to address the bullpen with washed up vets from other orginization. was a terrible way to approach it. Not surprised after you were happy with this offseason
3 Anibal has been extremely mediocre. 3.6 era and 1.19 whip in a tigers uni. Decent numbers but not worth the gigantic contract he signed.
4. Fister was then traded for Steve Lombardozzi, Ian Krol Robbie Ray. less than two years later and 2 are no longer in the orginization, and one has a 5+ era
Yes the cabrera trade was goat.
5. he hired Brad Ausmus, who is probably in the top 5 worst managers in baseball
Over the last 5 years our problems have been the exact same. We have had good ball clubs, but haven't made the correct moves to put us over the top and win it all.
Dombrowski has been one of the better GM's over the last 14 years getting the tigers out of the basement, but i support illitch's decision to take the team in another direction. He has as deep of pockets as it comes so i expect us to be very active this winter.
It seems to me the only flaw he had was that he traded away some affordable pitching the last few years. Fister and Porcello would've been easier to retain than Scherzer and Price. Then he signed Verlander to that gigantic contract when he had the example of Halladay melting down right in front of him. Other than that, dude knows what he's doing. He won't stay unemployed long
Yes, I'm irate because I don't think this is the best move for the Tigers and I don't understand the timing. I would have kept Dombrowski no matter what.
Sure, building a bullpen was not Dombrowski's strong suit. That doesn't mean every signing he made bombed. Valverde had a perfect save season here and was very effective for two years. Benoit was probably his best bullpen signing and should not have been let go last year. Nathan had outstanding numbers the year before the Tigers signed him. Soria was too hurt to be effective last year but again, consistently good career numbers. It was a combination of poor gambles and poor luck. I'd rather have an elite starting rotation than a lock-down bullpen, because finding the latter is way more of a crapshoot.
Anibal Sanchez was the AL leader in ERA in 2013 when Scherzer won the Cy Young. Remember that perfect game he threw for 5 innings against Boston in the 2013 ALCS? The no-hitter he had through 7 this year? Yeah, that's mediocre alright. His only knock is his durability. He's also on an extremely team-friendly contract. His numbers this year, especially the high home run rate, are an outlier from his career numbers. He'll be fine.
What about the trade that got us Fister? That was a highway robbery by Dombrowski. You can't acknowledge one trade and ignore the other. Trading Fister was the right idea, he just didn't get the right return. Or, he may have and screwed it up by getting Greene for Ray, who looks pretty good in Arizona. Overall, not his best move, but not a disaster like everyone thinks it was.
Sure, it's easy to blame him for Ausmus now but it was a pretty reasonable hire that most people liked at the time. It hasn't worked out. His other manager hire seemed to work out pretty well, as I recall.
It's a lot harder to sustain success in baseball than it is in any other sport because only 8 teams make the (real) playoffs. If you get in, you have a real shot to win the whole thing. To me, getting in the playoffs for 4 straight years is as good as it gets in baseball. It's not Dombrowski's fault the team couldn't get it done once it was there. They had enough to win it all in 2012 and 2013 for sure, and likely 2014 (if everyone had been healthy) as well, but didn't. I don't understand how DD can be to blame for what happened in the playoffs. It's a cop-out and it's bullshit.
He made mistakes this past year, like trading for Simon and probably giving up on Ray too soon and trading him for Greene. But he just about fixed our biggest problem going forward with two big trades, and I'm sure he would have gotten the pieces we needed to contend next year. What has Avila, Dombrowski's right-hand man since his days with the Marlins, done to make anyone believe he'll be better? How is this any better than hiring a first-time manager like Ausmus? I don't understand the logic here.
The Porcello trade, the Iglesias trade, the Gose trade, the Kinsler trade, getting JD Martinez off the scrap heap, the list goes on and on. Sure he's had some misses but this has been the best era of Tigers baseball in decades and Dombrowski is the reason why.
I don't understand why giving the team over to a rookie is suddenly going to get us a World Series. Like I said, we tried that. The move reeks of stupidity.
The kinsler trade wasn't exactly great. Fielder is raking it, and he was hurt when we traded him. Were still paying a ton of his contract as well.
He did make a ton of good moves. Illitch is desperate to win. There must have been something going on between him, avila, and Illitch. some kind of rift. Its the only thing that explains it.
Fielder's contract is awful and he's not going to age well. Kinsler's is affordable and gets less expensive as it goes on. We pay 6 million a year for Prince, so what? We had the best offense in the AL (with Cespedes) this season. We didn't need Prince and Miggy will age better as a first baseman. The trade has worked out well for both sides.
Yeah it's pretty obvious DD and Mr. I were at odds about something. But it's strange to fire him a day after the deadline. There's no way he would have traded away Price/Cespedes/Soria without Mr. I's approval.
they both pretty much suck. Grandees on can't even hit the Mendoza line against lefties. Only reason why he hit so many homers in NY was cause the Yankees play in a little league ballpark
Pretty sure he hit a bunch of HR's away from Yankee Stadium. I dont feel like pulling up Austin Jacksons stats but I know he wasnt that good. Grandy hit 40+ HR's in back to back seasons.
He sucks now. I dont give a fuck doe. He was good the first year, really good the next two years, and then injured the last year. I dont care how well he does with the Mets. I know he's not hitting as many HR's cuz citifield is big as fuck. Hes gettin pretty old too.
He flipped Austin Jackson into David Price, who he then flipped for Norris and Boyd. Oh yeah, and Scherzer was part of that deal as well. I think that deal worked out just fine.
Ausmus is a bitch. I heard he was complaining about Cueto's delivery the other night. Who gives a fuck how he throws the ball. If they were doing well against him, it wouldnt be an issue.
Gardenhire's last few years in Minnesota didnt go too well although he wasnt given a lot to work with. Still not sure he's someone you want running your team.

Verlander still has some good mileage on him. Hes starting to figure out how to pitch without a 100 MPH fastball.
the Fister trade was terrible.
Either way. Avila has been his right hand man since 2002. I don't expect us to go downhill. Slightly altered yes.

Hell Nick was at one time rated a higher prospect than mike trout

Jacksons first2 years he was pretty good.
But yeah we probably should have kept him.
Give us a little more credit, at least we somewhat know what we're talking about lol.
