None of these players are good anymore. Your starting rotation is still meh and you're losing the best closer in the game. And you think players like Beltran, who can't stay healthy, are going to make the difference? I'm skeptical.
maybe not this year or next, but he's an over-30 catcher thats already had some injury issues and he faded pretty badly down the stretch last year. they gave him, what? 5 years? only the faggot yankees and their money can do stupid shit like that
Yeah their plan is shit if you're thinking long term but they are the ultimate "win-now" team. They finished 85-77 last season with Teixiera, Granderson, Jeter, Arod and Youkilis out for more than half the season. If Jeter and Teixeira come back strong and these new contracts pay off this season, they'll make it deep into the playoffs.
If you have enough to own a Major League Baseball team, why wouldn't you invest a lot of money into that team? You can't buy happiness, but you can certainly buy championships. Just ask the Steinbrenner's.
thats a cheap way to win though. it hides all the other glaring deficiencies they have. i actually think thats a big reason they've won so little with their gargantuan payrolls the last dozen years. they have so many mercenaries and so little heart. half those guys don't give a shit about winning. i mean, their infield alone made more money than 16 teams last year and they didn't even crack the playoffs.
if you look at the years a) between when baseball enforced a draft and the yanks couldn't just pick their players at will and start of free agency when they could again ('65-'75 if you're keeping up) and b) the years where steinbrenner was banned ('90-'93), they didn't win shit. they don't know how to build teams without throwing their money around. fuck that franchise
You gotta do whatever it takes, even if that means spending your precious money. You gonna tell me Ted Turner can't spare a few bucks to pick up some free agents when the Braves are about to play in their 3rd stadium in the past two decades?

he hasn't owned the braves since the aol-timewarner merger
it's some shitty corporation that doesn't give a fuck about winning. they actually have a lower payroll now than they did in the late 90's
when he owned the team and was letting the baseball guys like schuerholz make decisions, the braves won every year. since he got bought out, the braves have been either middling or bad
i think their success depends on how they react to matt williams. going from somebody old and laid back like davey johnson to a younger, fiery guy can end up rubbing people the wrong way
that said, they worry me because they should've been a lot better than they were last year. they got hot at the end and made it a little more of a race than it should've been. howard and strasburg are primed for superstar years

Always an easy series win <:-P
