Phil said on one of the Corruption video that he was trying to make it so that people could understand what he was saying without going through the lyric book.
So my guess is that it was just done a different way than before.
Personally I think his voice sounds better now I liked it on the somatic defilement and this is exile but it really sounds deep, and tone wise it is really good
