Maiden and Priest at one point were extremely popular in the mainstream, however, I agree with you. I think a better way of putting it is "extreme metal" will never be able to enter the mainstream.

I'll defend it to the death, I don't care how much hate it gets.
I had an awkward moment today at a gas station, because I was wearing my Black Dahlia shirt and the guy pumping gas next to me was wearing a "Jesus died for you, remember that (or something along those lines)" shirt, and we both noticed eachother's shirt, then had a real awkward stare down for a second.
Of course our generation won't be remembered by metal, even though deathcore IS really mainstream. But music otherwise hasn't changed much in the past decade. There's Miley Cyrus becoming another, well, slutty teen diva, and there's the Jonas Brothers and their abstinence rings. Them and Lady Gaga are what have been the most popular, and that's most likely what the generation will be remembered by.

Metal music has also been brought up in quite a few court rooms over the years

I think HSB put it right when he said "no one listens to good music". Lol
