Are CD's 440 Kbps before you rip them? My friend said if you just put a CD into a stereo or computer etc, it's 440 Kbps but when you rip it to put it on hot iPod or whatever, the file use 320
He's wrong. To my knowledge, 320 is as lossless as it gets, except for flac.
Lossless? I didn't think there was a 440 Kbps. I always assumed CD's were 320 Also when I buy a cd, I put it right on iTunes and then onto my iPod. If CD quality is 320, once the file is on my iPod is it less than 320?

CD files are AAC. When you put them on itunes they are converted to MP3, and might lose a slight bit of quality. However, there is an option you can choose when you plug in your ipod to convert your ipod's mp3's to high quality AAC files.

"So there is no such thing as 440? How can I convert it to 320? I'd like all my CD's to be that"
Not to my knowledge and the only thing you can do is download it again. I can't claim to have a full 320 music library, but about 1/3 of it is. I just download the ones that I think would sound better. I don't really bother giving thrash 320, because it's not particularly layered, but I always give folk, post, or doom 320, because it usually is.
