Police from multiple jurisdictions were called to the area of Delafield Street and Courtland Street in New Brunswick about an hour ago to clear a student block party, dubbed "Delafest," that had gotten out of control, witnesses at the scene say.
The party, attended by at least 200 young people, turned unruly, requiring police to move in with riot shields, according to the Breaking News Network.
Capt. J.T. Miller of the New Brunswick Police Department told The Star-Ledger that "some of the people acted in defiance of police” called to disperse the crowd.
Police used pepper spray in at least one instance in an attempt to disperse the crowd, according to witnesses and photos posted on Instagram (http://bit.ly/115slE5).
Photos and videos from the scene that were posted on Twitter show young people standing on roofs, shattering beer bottles, crowding streets, and setting a couch on fire.
Authorities now have the situation under control and are still clearing the area, according to radio transmissions.
Students say that "Delafest" is a grassroots, student-run unofficial alternative to the previously annual Rutgersfest, which was cancelled by Rutgers University officials in 2011 after multiple violent incidents, including shootings.
