Hopefully that works out for you. I'd love to do it from the music end. I'm really good with correlations, numbers, databases and shit so the research end of marketing suits me well.
Out of curiosity, have you ever considered getting involved in a record label? They look for people like you and I ideally.
Not that I wouldn't move out of Chicago, but the closest metal related label here is Victory. I know people that worked there and have told me the horror stories. I really wanted to intern at a label and go from there, but from what I gathered, I'd be required to move. If you know something I don't about labels in Chicago, fucking a, tell me.
Yeah I've heard a lot of poor things about Victory as well, from bands and employees/affiliates alike. Apparently they take any leftover money that the bands make or something and it doesn't sit well with them.
To be honest, I don't plan on staying with Relapse if I get a job there. I mean, it depends on how far up I can move and what the pay is like, but even at a top position, I can't imagine it's a lot.I hate to say that money matters as much as it does, but at the same time, not gonna lie. Ideally, I'd move up to something like WMG in the city, even though I told myself a while back that I'd not want to work with artists like that.
I'm not too familiar with other labels in Chicago aside from the nearby Victory Records. However, I do know that the promotion companies associated with many labels are not few and far between. For example, Relapse goes through a promotion company in Long Branch, NJ. There may very well be things like that near you.

I know a shit ton promoters here and I'm tight with lots of the venues here. I'll have to do some more networking to get in on something other than the free show aspect of the business.
