    :|:|:| MC just fucking stop. Please.

    Poker and Chess are not sports, nor are they considered sports. They are games. Sports require some sort of physical portion. Hence why golf and fishing are sports. Come on dude.

    sport
    spôrt/
    noun
    1. an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

    synonyms: physical recreation, physical activity, physical exercise, athletics

    Only chess is recognized as a sport by the national olympic association, and poker by a lot of people too. They show that shit on espn. Same as Nascar.

    Also, fishing involves about as much "physical excersion" as pro-gaming. You cast, you reel.

    Not saying all videogames should be considered sports, just as not all ball games should be. But professional competitive e-sports are a thing, and I dont think they should be ignored because they aren't sports in the traditional sense of the word.

    Its pretty apparent you have no idea what you are talking about and are just pulling stuff out of your ass, but this is particularly hilarious. Have you ever been fishing before? And not "at your local pond" fishing, but real fishing?

    Not to mention you've never driven a car at 150+ miles an hour, so how can you confidently say its not physically demanding?

    Doubt you've ever played golf either.

    Gaming is not a sport by ANY definition of the word. The only ones rallying for it are dorks who have never played an actual sport in their lives and are delusional about what defines the term sport.

    Auto-racing = sport
    Competitive fishing = sport
    Poker = not a sport
    Chess = not a sport
    Video games = not a fucking sport whatsoever wtf

    I'll freely admit that my personal definition of "sport" is not what the dictionary says, and to be honest I don't actually have a set criteria of what makes one activity a sport or not. I just make a judgement call on a case by case basis lol

    Regardless of my loose definition, competitive video game playing is not a sport in the least bit. C'mon man.

    You've obviously never seen a competive gaming match then. Its mentally taxing. You need to know how to strategize, counter strategize, work and communicate as a team. Its a lot more than sitting in a basment pushing buttons. You need speed and precision in your mouse and key movements to optimize time. You need to push your reaction time.

    Again, so what if its not a "sport" or conditioning in a traditional sense? A lot more goes into it than you think.

    Alao, have you ever seen a pro gamer? They're not fat neckbeard type people. They're typically skinny to fit in body type, and fit and trained mentally.

    E-sports are attracting in the tens of thousands of viewers too. Sure thats small compared to established sports of today, but thats pretty damn good for just games.

    Im surprised none of y'all even consider it as a possibilty. Why cant things that are mentally taxing be considered sporty? Why cant athletes of the mind be considered athletes?

    I once had a friend redefine what art was. He said that something as simple as stopping your car can be considered art. The perfect stop. The finess of the movement of your feet.The communication your body has. Etc

    Taking that idea, could sports not also be art? The perfect spiral of a thrown football, the finess of the hand its thrown from, the arc of a pass, the catch. The scene as a whole. Some people may look at the pefect pass as artistic.

    If a sport can be an art, why not an art a sport?

    I have, and I fully agree that it's intense and mentally taxing. Still not a sport though.

    Alao, have you ever seen a pro gamer? They're not fat neckbeard type people. They're typically skinny to fit in body type, and fit and trained mentally.

    You could make the exact same point about competitive eaters.

    The number of fans means 0

    No offense here, but this all sounds exactly like something I'd expect to hear from someone that doesn't follow sports trying to talk about sports. You'd really need to understand sports culture to see why competitive gaming isn't considered a sport. To me, it's pretty obvious, but to someone that doesn't follow sports, I can see how it'd be confusing.

    Why cant athletes of the mind be considered athletes?

    Because its trying to attach a label to something for the sake of having a label, not because it fits. The whole motive behind this dumb argument is that gamers dont feel like they are respected, so they are trying to associate with something that is almost universally respected in some form, which brings us to sports.

    Are chess players and poker players and gamers great tacticians, critical thinkers, strategists, etc? Absolutely. Are they athletes? No. Why does that have to have a negative connotation?

    Its like saying that athletes are musicians. Sneakers on a basketball court produce sound, do they not? The cadence of a quarterback before he snaps the ball can be rhythmic, no?
