Okay, assuming you like Ska, Streetlight Manifesto was a blast. If you ever liked RATM, Hyro Da Hero was fun. I don't know you're opinion on Every Time I Die ( they're not like typical metalcore now-a-days), but if you don't hate them they're fun. Anti-Flag are fun punk rock. I don't think you liked indie rock/ dance punk at all, but if you do Funeral Party was good. These bands were on the 2012 bill.
You are kind of right, though. While the line-up does vary, is it mostly genres that could be seen as "high school" whether it's indie rock, post-hardcore, ska, punk rock, etc. So thinking of it now, I don't blame you for having those views.
i tried streetlight before and wasn't impressed. i like etid in small doses. their song 'we'rewolf' is pretty cool. anti-flag are meh to me. i'm not really interested in what's called punk anymore. it's a dead horse genre afaic. the funeral party description kinda sounds like death from above 1979, which i really enjoy. i'll try them out.
imo indie rock is best when done either noisy like sonic youth or kinda lo-fi/emotional shit like elliott smith. i like the liars and black heart procession a lot. none of that is warped's style though. my idea of post-hardcore is antiquated and the bands that fit the bill now that i see are just cheese. also, i have bad association with ska-punk hybrid bands because it was a lame trend when i was in high school.
my favorite warped was the first one. L7 and seaweed headlined with deftones, sublime, quicksand, sick of it all and orange 9mm on the bill. it was nice and diverse. there was almost no pandering to trends prior to vans involvement. ever since then, the lineups became less and less interesting and more and more repetitive. the last one i went to had good charlotte on the bill and a lot of the support bands were good charlotte clones. i left before 5 o'clock and skipped nofx because it was so lame
It's really not too hard to stay away from the karate kids at Warped. There's usually a pretty good sized barrier of people between them and the front of the stage.
can i just say that at Mayhem, at least people are considerate around the pits like if they hit you theyll be like 'oh my bad, sorry' or whatever but at Warped, theyre mostly these middle school douches that dont give a shit if they punch someone in the face thats not even near a pit i saw this one kid just literally run into a group of people who were just standing there while flailing his arms
