Well think about it. Most players in that kind of setting are tuning low, have thick strings, don't have perfect pitch, and aren't playing with the best technique. When they're playing live they're just having fun and don't need to worry about whether or not they're hitting the note spot on. Fretless bass just isn't ideal for hardcore punk or genres like it. And besides, you're making it sound like fretless is the norm in metal. There are probably no more than 10 bassists you can name that you listen to that use a fretless bass in rock/metal.
