Call it the "Fab Five" flap.
Former college hoops and NBA star Jalen Rose reportedly is taking issue with that nickname when used by media outlets in reference to the US women's gymnastics team.
Rose was a member of the famed Michigan Wolverines basketball team of the early 1990s, a talented group of players that also included standouts Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson and Jimmy King.
The media also dubbed them the "Fab Five." And that's the problem, Rose claims.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Rose says media outlets are just being "lazy" when they use the nickname for Team USA gold-winning gymnasts Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, Jordyn Wieber and Kyla Ross.
“To use the nickname just points and screams of lazy journalism by the national media, that’s really what it is,” the paper quotes Rose as telling radio station 97.1's Jamie Samuelsen. “It’s no fault at all of the young gymnasts. But I really wish they would have come up with an even more creative tag for them and their gold medal pursuit.”
Rose now works for ESPN and is a part of the network's Olympic coverage. He recently secured a trademark on the phrase "Fab Five," the Free Press reports, citing Businessweek.com.
The paper cited an attorney who suggested that Rose may want to talk to the gymnastics team about the use of the nickname. But Rose apparently doesn't bear any ill will toward America's newest sweethearts and isn't blaming them.
“Once the media decides what they’re going to call you, that’s your name,” the paper quoted Rose as saying. “I’ve heard they (gymnasts) wanted to be called ‘Furious Five’ or something different, which leads me to believe that’s a tag the media put on them.”
I figured it was only a matter of time until someone brought this up. However the difference here is that the gymnasts actually won something, unlike the Michigan basketball team. Oh and Aly Raisman wasn't trying to call a time out in the middle of her last tumbling pass.
