dude i watched a guitar tutarial from Randy Rhoads once.. and he said: grow your fingernails out so your finger tips have more support when placing the strings agianst the fret board for a cleaner heavier sound [-(

alot of people just grow out their thumb nail..not all their nales... and you dont want to grow out the nails on your playing hand, just your strumming hand

bullshit when i played i grew mine out, and i could shred alot easier, i'm not sayin grow them out like chick nails but just a lil past the tip of your finger.. if you dont the skin on the tip of your finger will wrap around the string occastionally

i dont agree at all but everyone plays different.. i need really short nails on my playing hand and i also find it hard to finger pick if your nails are a little long

For bass you're not supposed to have fingernails at all. For guitar, depends on the style but anywhere from just the thumb to all the finger nails get grown out. Flamenco is a perfect example.
