1. Black Sabbath 2. Iron Maiden 3. Judas Priest 4. Metallica
Those are the only 4 I find essential. Like if you took a rap fan in a room and tried to get them to like metal, this is all you need. Of course, about 20 other bands could fill that last spot if you started talking about specific genres.
Throw in Budgie, Sir Lord Baltimore, and Vanilla Fudge and I think you have all the groundwork for what metal has become that wasn't done by Sabbath, Deep Purple, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, and Motorhead.

Those bands are just so popular and mainstream, I barely even consider them bands to talk about with other metalheads. If Im talking to someone who is into pop music then those are the bands I will say I like.... However if I am getting into a discussion with someone who claims to live metal.... Then I would not be talking about those bands. I'd automaticallly start in with Death, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Opeth. If that guy is like "who?" then im like "fuck off"

Well that's why you probably needed to be more specific with exactly what your were looking for in the topic.

Night Sun and NU are two I've been into.
But I don't know how much everyone here would like Krautrock.

Or thought they sucked so much that there were no comments from anyone on them.
