my fuckin' ipod...

i bought a 160gb ipod classic about 4 months ago. the fucker has never sync'd correctly with my machine, even thought the people at apple told me it would. i turned it on friday for a car ride and it listed "no artists". i took it back home and tried to sync it to see what's wrong. it syncs, but it shows absolutely no media loaded (i had 100gb of music and 5 playlists) and it won't allow me to load any new music as well. it deleted the device's name and everything. i'm leaving saturday morning for florida and that fucker was supposed to entertain us on the ride down. fuckin' bullshit!

anyone know how to format/wipe out an ipod without syncing it?

i'm pretty sure if i can get it back to "factory" settings, i can start over and get it ready for my trip.

There's a restore button when you plug it in that you press and it will do just what you need.

keep in mind, i run ubuntu. it doesn't have itunes, but a program called rhythmbox (which is my main culprit)

lol. yeah... no you are fucked. gotta get that to a windows box and itunes. or a mac. if you call apple they will just tell you that their ipods require Windowes or a Mac to sync.

so...if i plug it into a mac with itunes, i could still be able to reset it?

yes. in itunes when you plug it in, you go to the screen that is the main page for your device (ie... click on the device). On that page near the bottom will be a button "restore device". that will wipe all and reinstall.

lol at idiot people. if someone is asking to do a restore, you should just tell them and not worry about their OS. If they (you in this case) don't have windows/macOS then let you solve that one. here is a pic for you

disregard the hold shift key. That is only if you want to restore it with your own file. should look the same on a mac

my brother has a mac, so i'm going to his house later to restore the pod. i still have to figure out a way to get my music back on the thing, but this is a start.

I've heard that the itunes alternative to use in Linux is Amarok. I havent used it myself, but when I did research into the dozen open source alternatives, I convinced myself that Amarok was absolutely the way to go.

i dl'd amarok last night. it's given me all sorts of problems already. i'm just gonna upload some shit to my brother's computer and put it on the pod for my trip, then figure out a longterm solution when i get back from vacation.

good idea. Itunes is the only reason why I have a windows machine. Well that and my wife freaks out at the mention of the word linux.

yeah, no shit. my girlfriend is the same way. she hate's the ubuntu machine, but my windows machine got a virus w/in like 3 days of me formatting it. guess i'll have to format it again and figure out a way to make it see the ubuntu machine so i can ftp songs over to it. i think i have a 300gb drive laying around somewhere that i could put on it just to load music. it's just more trouble and time that i don't have. apple is dumb as fuck for the way they handle their gear. you don't ever see phillips dvd players that don't work with sony tv's do you?

yeah... What really pisses me off to no ends about it, is MacOS is fucking built on Linux! (Or FreeBSD but basically the same shit). For them to offer a "closed source" binary of itunes for linux, it is a matter of hitting compile. I wouldnt even care what distro they supported.... It is total Ass if you ask me.

well...it just makes me not want to buy their shit. i'd actually actively avoided apple stuff for the last 14 years because the last mac i had was such an annoying failure. i prefer to be able to customize my gadgets to make them do what i want, the way i want. the only reason i gave in and bought this ipod was because of the storage.

I wish I could avoid them... I just have too much respect for the Hardware they create. The ipod line is just awesome.... As a hardware designer I am in awe of what they can create.

It is their corporate policies that are fucked. I want to walk away.... but just can't live with inferior electronics.
