Friday brought sad news from Morey's Piers in Wildwood, New Jersey: An 11-year old girl has died after falling from the Giant Wheel, NBC Philadelphia reports.
The as-yet unnamed girl was on the moving Ferris wheel roughly half-way up the ride when she fell from the car at around 12:30pm, police told the station. That's the equivalent of falling from the top of a five-story building.
Local police told local NBC report Ted Greenberg that the girl was likely on a school trip at the time of the incident, which has been ruled a freak accident. Greenberg tweeted a photo from the scene (click here to view).
Morey's Piers released a statement saying: "The Morey staff and family offer our thoughts and prayers to the family."
The Associated Press reports that the Ferris wheel and several others have been closed.
