Johnny Cash sounds like an old man who doesn't know who he is in his version.
That is why it is great, that song sounded real, and at that time in his life, I believe it was about as real as that song could get, Reznor did a wonderful job on the original, but in the end it sounded robotic, almost programmed, just like NIN is meant to be, which isn't bad, but Johnny made that song real.
Exactly, he just lost the love of his life, he was singing his pain and made you feel it as if it were your own, if he made you depressed with that song than he did what it was meant to do.

if you've ever seen Reznor play "Hurt" live you wouldn't call it robotic.
I understand that, I was talking studio recordings though, although Reznor does pull off that song very well live.
Yeah Johnny Cash's has been called "haunting" for a reason. I think it is alright, but I haven't listened to it since the the first time I did. It's one of those that would get on my nerves after so long.
Seeing it played live was amazing.. I wish he would've played it the last time.
I'll openly admit that RWIB has brought me to tears before. There's only a couple songs that can do that to me, with Hero of War by Rise Against being the sole other.
