Beavis n Butthead wont be doing the music video thing anymore:
A couple of weeks ago, we posted news of the impending return of Beavis and Butt-Head, which is, obviously, terrific news. But reader Josh Kruk brought up a terrific point in the comments section when he wondered “How will they do video roasts since the music video is a dying (dead?) medium?” Now that MTV doesn’t really show music videos anymore, you had to wonder what B&B would be watching while engaging in their own unique brand of media criticism. (If you somehow have no idea what I’m talking about, please check out the above classic clip of Beavis and Butt-Head enjoying Pantera’s video for “This Love.”)
Well, now MTV president Van Toffler has provided an answer. Speaking to Rolling Drone, Toffler had this to say on the matter:
“They’ll be self-contained segments with the boys in different situations like they used to be… But this time around, they’ll watch Jersey Shore, UFC matches and user-generated videos from YouTube, in addition to music videos.”
And lest you be worried that The Dynamic Duo watching YouTube videos would mean they’d now be sitting in front of a computer instead on their famous couch, well, fret not — Toffler goes on to say that no matter what they’re watching, the boys will be viewing it on their television.
And you know what? That actually strikes me as a GREAT idea. In a lot of ways, YouTube is the MTV of today — it’s what the young ‘uns watch when they’re bored. Ditto reality programs like Jersey Shore. So it makes perfect sense that Beavis and Butt-Head would watch those things and expound upon them. Assuming creator Mike Judge and his fellow writers do their jobs correctly, I’d wager B&B’s critiques of these newer forms of entertainment will be just as hilarious (and oddly insightful) as their critiques of music videos were back in the day.
Beavis and Butt-Head should be back on MTV sometime this summer.
