An officer was grazed by a bullet and a K-9 officer was shot during a hostage standoff in Salem, N.J. Wednesday.

It all started around 3 p.m. when two Salem city officers and a detective responded to a domestic dispute at a duplex along the 300 block of E Broadway Street, according to authorities.

As police approached the property a man allegedly opened fire on the cops who in turn returned fire. The officer and K-9 were hit during the shootout.

The officer suffered a graze wound from a bullet in the incident, according to Salem County Prosecutor John T. Lenahan who is on the scene along with a large, armed presence of other law enforcement officers.

A Salem City Police K-9 dog was hit by gunfire from the home. The dog reportedly was hit in the chest and taken to a local veterinarian and is being transported to the University of Pennsylvania’s Veterinary Hospital for further treatment.

The man had allegedly taken hostages including children and possibly his girlfriend, authorities said.

State, county and city police were on the scene. By 11 p.m. the standoff still wasn't resolved.

About 100 people from nearby homes were evacuated and taken to a nearby shelter, police said.
