I have 2 road trips coming up for my son's spring hockey. First he gets to skate at Notre Dame and the next weekend he gets to skate at the St Louis Blues facility.
Jobe, how do you tread the fine line between encouraging your son and pushing him? As much as people look down upon the asshole sports dads, I can see how their mentality develops.
I'm just asking because I've been thinking about fatherhood lately. Plus it sounds like your son and his team are really good and they've got to do a lot of cool shit because of it.
Its been an amazing experience for him. He got pretty lucky and his team is an awesome group of kids. Hockey is just something he wanted to try and loved it immediately, so it was really easy to get him to get him to put the work in. He wants to be at every practice an hour early, would have to be dead to miss game etc, but he is by o means the star of the team either.
Its harder with the younger one because he can't make up his mind if he loves it or hates it. A lot of the kids are little assholes. Most of their parents are assholes who think their kid is going to be in the NHL. I dont want him to give up on it, but I wouldn't blame him if he did.
The biggest thing is to give up on what you think he will be in your mind and let them figure out what they want to do. You might dream of the day you can teach them guitar, and its great to expose them to things you like, but they will probably have totally different interests than you and you have to embrace the shit they want to do. Hockey was never even on my radar. He tried wrestling, didn't like it. Did soccer, did great, didn't like it. Tried hockey and he was hooked. The only rule I have is no quitting, once you sign on your all in until the season is over.
