1) Jesus Christ (cliche, I do think he's fictional, but his teachings in the Bible are very helpful) 2) Tyler Durden (Fight Club) 3) Andrew "Ender" Wiggin (Ender's Game) 4) Theo Faron (Children of Men)
It just doesn't make sense to me, because it's letting something completely artificial influence you. Like, there could be a brave and good willed character, and you can say "That inspires me." but it's the writer giving them those traits, and the writer obviously isn't like that or other characters in the story, they give them their traits.
This is what we're saying, though. You don't know the writer or how he acts, you know the characters. You recognize the characters as an outlet, and as I said, you can gain good values from them. I grew up in the late 90's, so I reminisce on both the cartoons and the stories that were read to me. I can still stop and think "what would Doug Funnie do?"
You don't need to know the writer to recognize characteristics.
