I just read back through the whole draft convos and I still agree with a lot of assessments. I think the Fairley pick seems good in theory but isn't smart. I think Amukamara would have won them more games now that Fairley will. Fairley plays the same DT position as Suh, who he sure as hell isn't replacing. Basically, he's learning a new position. Bad pick and I think it will show in the season.
So you don't trust Schwartz, who coached a dominant defensive line in Tennessee, to know what fits in his scheme and what doesn't? Come on. He wouldn't have pulled the trigger if he didn't think Fairley could be good. Having Vanden Bosch and Suh and Corey Williams on that line will help him, not hinder him. As for lack of a corner, once free agency finally start, they will get one. There are a few that can make as immediate an impact as Amukamara.
I don't think it's a bad pick for the Lions unless they don't get any help in free agency, but Mayhew has proven he knows how to work free agency.
Yes. He coached a dominant defensive line in Tennessee and will get a ton of credit for that, but that does not mean I think Fairley is a good pick. Fairley has the potential to be as good as Suh. However, I believe Fairley will get dollar signs in his eyes and become the nightmare that Michael Crabtree is starting to become for the 49ers. I think you will get 6/10 or 7/10 performance out of a once in a generation type talent. He is bad news everywhere except for the field, and that's exactly what Pacman, TO and Chad Ochocinco are like. He's immature, he's stupid and he's immensely talented.
If he is playing on the Lions in 2016 color me surprised.

Vanden Bosch and Suh, not to mention Schwartz, will be coaching him. He won't be allowed to slack. If he can't succeed in that defense with that leadership, he won't succeed at all. He's not going to play every snap, so fatigue isn't going to be an issue. I am wary about his baggage, but like I said, if Schwartz and Mayhew were concerned about that, they would have taken the safe pick in Amukamara. I'm going to trust them on this.

Go ahead, I'm not saying you can't or even shouldn't. I just distrust Fairley more than I trust Schwartz. I'm a Schwartz believer all the way, but I think this wasn't the best decision.
I also don't think Fairley is capable of success anywhere, even the best DL in the NFL like the Lions.
I hated the pick at first, but it carries a lot less risk than any of the shit they pulled when Millen was picking. If he doesn't cut it, we have a solid defensive line rotation. But I do expect them to push hard for free agent cornerbacks.
