Scary how close Mallett's measureables were to Brady. And Mallett probably has the better arm.
Brady was fat and out of shape at the combine with those numbers. Mallett wasn't.
I do not believe Mallett will become a quality starter under Belichick, no matter how much time he has under Brady. The same way I don't think Hoyer will either.

You can't compare Mallett and Hoyer. Mallett has a very high ceiling. Hoyer does not have the tools that Mallett does.

I disagree. I'm not a fan of this draft class (inc. Kaepernick), and I think Mallett has so much that concerns you. He's a volatile character. Drug abuse and alcoholism are among the concerns. Lack of athleticism is one of his more glaring on the field issues. My biggest problem with him is what he has in his brain. He seems straight up stupid. He'll impress you in shorts and a t-shirt, but once you put him in pads and in a game, he'll shut down. Put him by a 3-4 OLB with a sub 5.0 40 (aka all of them) and he'll just lose it. He'll be backing up Brady for another 5 years and if Belichick puts his faith in him, it will be the destruction of the franchise.
As far as I know, the drug and alcohol concerns are rumors. And you know Belichick wouldn't draft him if he felt that was an issue. The decision making issues can be fixed, as can his ability to move in the pocket. Potential-wise, he has among the highest ceiling of any of the QBs in this draft because of the physical tools he has.
Besides that pick, the Patriots have had a meh draft this year. No pass rusher, which they desperately needed imo.

If we're talking highest ceiling due to physical tools, it's got to be Cam Newton or Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick's lack of premier opposition and unorthodox offense in Nevada kept him out of the first round, and Newton was the #1 pick with all of his off the field issues.
His ability to move in the pocket will forever be lackluster, although his pocket awareness can be improved. Also, the drug use has been confirmed, as well as his former arrest for public intoxication at Arkansas.
We all know Cam Newton didn't deserve to be the number one pick. That's not debatable at all really. Not even close to the best player in this draft. Ryan Mallett is certainly a better choice than Christian Ponder......

Well, Christian Ponder possibly does have a lower ceiling than Mallett, but his value is in what he can do immediately. Ponder will probably be the starter in Minnesota this year, and whether that's a good decision or not is to be seen.
I fully believe that aside from Von Miller and Patrick Peterson, Cam Newton has the highest ceiling of any player in this draft. However, I do not believe that his likelihood to reach that potential is greater than 5%.
Still, if the Vikings were going to reach for a QB, why not an Andy Dalton? And I don't know. Unless you put Newton in a spread he's going to be limited in what he can do because his throwing ability is not great right now.

After reading some more on the Patriots and Mallett, I can't say the pick is terrible, I just don't think it is what everyone is saying it is. I don't believe Mallett can be Brady's successor and I don't believe that he will be a successfull NFL quarterback. I do believe that it is an excellent move for the Patriots, who now have two 1sts and 2nds next year again as well as picking up a project from the Randy Moss trade. They're truly masters of their craft. They should have just waited for Stanzi.
Stanzi isn't much better of a decision maker than Mallett.....as a Big Ten guy who watched a lot of his games, I know he is definitely someone who will throw the bad interception.

I absolutely LOVE Stanzi. He's intelligent (not in his decision making, mind you), fairly athletic and can make all of the WCO throws. His intangibles are almost Tebow-esque and he can be gotten in the fourth or fifth round.
He'd have to sit for two years, because he needs to understand his reads a lot better and find a way to use that brain on the football field. I think he is one of the best mid-later round prospects in the whole draft, and I would like the 49ers to draft him even if they already spent one on Kaepernick.

probably???? he has the best arm i have ever seen
Elway...?
The 49ers got my boy out of Central Florida, Bruce Miller! Very excited, if he can become a little bit more fluid with his movements, he can be a pro bowler. Love that pick A LOT.
