They were going to cut him anyway. I like the move, but today's been a hell of the day in the NFC West.
One thing though that Wake should understand about that trade. Harvin will model his next contract after the one that Calvin Johnson got. So if you want to keep Harvin for more than a year, it's going to cost those three picks, plus about a sixth of your salary cap for at least 4 or 5 years.
Of the 1 year rentals, I like the 49ers move more. Also read that the Vikings offered a 7th rounder for Boldin today, but the 49ers were willing to do just a little more.
The Vikings are going to be in the Wallace sweepstakes now, though it sounds like they don't have much of a shot. They can probably get a nice receiver with one of those first rounders though. Tavon Austin might be available.

I really, really, really like the move for the Vikings, and I seem to be alone on that. If they can replace Harvin with someone like Tavon Austin or DeAndre Hopkins, then pick up another contributor, this is the best move they've made in a while.
I hope they don't get Wallace, even though they definitely could.
I can see Greg Jennings signing there too. It's a good move for the Vikings if they draft well.
That's the most important thing about all this. If the Rams draft like dummies for three years in a row, then that RGIII trade is literally the best in NFL history. I think Jennings would be great in Minnesota. Wonder if that'd be hard for him to do.
