I think it affected his draft position, but not that drastically. I don't think he's a third round player but I saw similar players go off the board in the 4th-5th rounds.
My thing with Sam is that there have been a lot of players that have played in the NFL that had no love for the game. It's just something they were good at. Dude showed up to the scouting combine out of shape. That doesn't show a huge commitment. It seems very possible to me that he saw an opportunity to get some fame off of football on his way out the door instead of just giving up. I do think his draft stock fell over being gay though. I know he had a 3rd round expectation prior to him coming out and the combine. But even that's really hard to gauge because guys like Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger dropped into the lower rounds when they had similar expectations. I'm not really judging Sam now though. I'll wait to see how it plays out. For the sake of other gay athletes, I really, really hope the suspicions are false because this could set others back quite a bit
Yeah showing up out of shape and underperforming in workouts crushed his stock. Sure he could have went in the 5th or 6th.. But the reason his stock fell was cause of his work ethic. Kiper and mcshay both had him listed as a late round pick the entire way. I'm all for what he's trying to do for the gay community but I'm starting to feel like there is something fishy about the way he's going about it. I'm sure some teams went with guys over Sam and factored in the media distraction it would bring but if they thought he was going to be a great player no way he would have slipped that far. Coaches and GM's jobs are on the line on draft day. One bad draft can cost you your career. Not one of those guys would have passed on Sam if they thought he could help their team and make an impact.
My sister went to college on a volleyball scholarship, just cuz it was free. She never even liked the sport. She liked softball, but didn't get good offers for it.
these are numbers from Larry Webster ( DE) a guy the lions drafted at the very end of the fourth pretty much 5th round (compensatory picks) I'd say that the numbers indicate he didn't drop because he was gay

well you football about as much as him and Shane so that seems right
the superdome is in shambles, just like the franchise that once called it home.
holy fuck you're retarded....no one has played there in like 15 years what would you expect
And you're like 4 weeks late on that breaking news story fag
Uirate
Nah you're just a fucking idiot. Hopefully you end up back at the mental hospital soon and hopefully this time they don't let you out

c'mon now
Sec defensive player if the year
Yeah he doesn't want it or anything....
doing good in college doesn't always transfer to the nfl
Fine but it still takes balls to question his work ethic .. Let's see your dpoy trophy

Pretty good summary of his skills. He basically racked up most of his sacks against inferior competition and Florida, then disappeared.
I was really supportive of sam at first but the Documentary thing really threw me off. Like really dude? You haven't even made the roster yet.
I wasn't questioning it. Nfl teams were.
His combine numbers
