im not good with computer tech but mine also has an i5 and it works fine, there's definitely room for improvement but because im still just using it for school; im ok with it..... when i was looking for a new laptop (that would run CAD and illustrator without any hitches) i just looked online for reviews of different laptops for CAD purposes.
Also.....I don't work in 3D (except for SketchUp, but any old computer can run that).... If you do work in 3D, you may want to look into a processor that works best for that.
i'd say forget the little things (like blu-ray) and max out the power on the sum-bitch
I WILL LOOK INTO ALIEN WARE BUT AIRT THEY SPECIAL FOR GAMING?
which means they have to have the best video cards
but if hes not a gamer having a redic video card means shit
ALL THIS PUT ASIDE
TO GET A 17" SCREEN WITH A ALIEN PRICES START AT $1800.00 BY THE TIME I TWEEK IT TO WHAT I WANT I'M LOOKING AT AROUND $3K A BIT MUCH THEN I WOULD HAVE TO PAY EXTRA FOR MY 3 YEAR WARRANTY

I THINK YOU GOT THE RIGHT IDEA TURN THE THING INTO A POWER HOUSE LEAVE ADD ONS FOR LATER (BLU-RAY, SOLID STATE DRIVE,EX...EX...EX...)
2D...... I use revit for 3d (post-design). and Sketchup as a 3d design tool.
i don't know if civil has it... but autocad has a WCS compass thing on the top-right corner that can change your model space perspective in a second. Definitely the best new feature.

in a way yes and no. you can just go buy one at best buy that's better then the one on Ailenware.

oh... and i've had no problems with Windows 7 and autodesk. Except that there is no 32-bit version for the 2011 releases.
THAT MEANS YOU HAVE TO HAVE A 64 BIT OS TO RUN IT?
never mind that... i just went back to the autodesk site where we get our programs from and there are 32 bit versions for all of the programs.
when i got regular CAD and revit only the 64 bit versions were available
VANILLA THEN
WHAT KIND OF DRAFTING DO YOU DO?
CIVIL
ARCHITECTURAL
MECHANICAL
FACILITY MANAGEMENT
.........
3D OR 2D?
