I know the feeling. My car has a cracked radiator hose..... The leak is slow enough that I can drive it for a few months without an issue, but eventually, it always ends up with too little coolant.... Mine hasn't actually broken down yet though, but I've sat at red lights before, and watched the temperature gauge climb into the red..... Not a good feeling.
Speaking of which, I have an update on the mechanic shop that unscrewed my oil filter and bolt, and tried to tell me I had an oil leak...... Well, I changed my oil a few days after that, and whaddaya know, there's no drips coming down. Well, I reported them to the BBB, and the owner of the chain of the shops replied to my complaint, telling me to call him so we can discuss the issue. Not sure what he intends to do to correct it..... He can't refund my money, the tire was under warranty..... He can't comp my next visit, because fuck that place, I don't trust them with my car.....

The last time I paid for an oil change, right after I bought my car, they didn't replace the filter. The old one exploded a month later and almost wrecked the engine. We thought it was blown up due to engine knock. When the owner of the shop came to look at my car and said that wasn't the brand of filter they used, I got pretty heated and started going off about the kind of service he does and how he rips people off by charging them for work they didn't do. Dude said he wasn't gonna listen to me yell at him and jumped in his truck and started to leave. I was ready to destroy a mother fucker, but he was already in the truck so I punted his truck and dented his rear fender in front of the tire (still had my steel toe work boots on) and he ended up calling the cops on me. I went in the house and put on some crocs while waiting for them to show up. My neighbor told them that she heard the guy say it wasn't their filter, and that he wasnt going to talk to me anymore, and when the cop checked the truck where the guy said I kicked it behind the tire and didn't see any damage, so I didn't get in any trouble. The car turned out to be just fine anyway.
We don't know yet. I mean, considering they'll charge you $30 if somebody cuts their hair in the bathroom, it may be a bit ridiculous, but that shit didn't need to last that long.

TL;DR - Always change your own oil.
