To say animals were put on Earth is a religious belief, because that implies they have a specific purpose. Seeing as (to my knowledge) we have no strongly religious people on here, that's not necessarily what you meant. Also, social darwinism is the belief that "survival of the fittest" applies to societies. It has nothing to do with animals, it's only related to the human-human relationship.
All this aside, ethical treatment of animals should be a given. We never should purposely inflict pain upon animals. It isn't something that can be morally done. However, that doesn't mean we all have to be vegans/vegetarians.

i heard scientists have discovered a way to take cells from an animal, then basically clone those cells into a piece of meat. I think thats the ultimate solution. No animal gets killed in the process, but people still get to eat meat
