Indeed, Gulch. Here's an example of a hot news story around here.....
St. Joe unlikely to allow chickens Thu, 08/26/2010 - 11:00am | Nora Maberry ST. JOSEPH – There will be no cackling within the village limits.
On Tuesday, the village board heard a proposal from resident Bryan Krall to allow residents to have hens at their homes. Krall, a professor at Parkland College, said he felt hens were no more of a nuisance then a cat or a dog. He also said hens provide organic, fresh eggs for families.
The village has an ordinance prohibiting livestock within the village limits.
Mayor B.J. Hackler said he had spoken with a local veterinarian who said hens do make noises and can cause a mess if not properly cared for.
Trustees Roy McCarty and Forrest Chism said they were concerned about homeowners taking care of their chickens and how the village would enforce an ordinance about chickens.
Hackler had requested that the health and safety committee look into the issue, but he said it's unlikely any change to current ordinances will be made.
