It’s a heavyweight battle between two of metal’s returning heroes next Summer with Slipknot and SOAD playing Sonisphere and Download respectively. Who’s got your vote? Check out our YouTube guide to both bands inside!
The big boys have revealed their big guns. Beez casts an eye over both bands and what we can expect from their 2011 performances at Sonisphere and Download!
Wow! What a week for UK metalheads! Two of the most cherished metal bands of the modern era have risen from the ashes to do battle to be crowned kings of the festival period in 2011.
On the one hand, Download pulled a rabbit out of the hat by revealing that System Of A Down were back in the game and going to headline the Saturday night at Donington Park. With a blank slate after four years on extended hiatus, who knows what System are going to be capable of in 2011. Back in the day, they were a phenomenal live act when they fancied it; a neon-bomb of mental time-signatures, some of the most outlandish stage get-ups known to man and tripped-out mayhem that saw them be the first band I ever saw blow Slayer clean off stage, when supporting them and Sepultura at the now-defunct London Astoria. Sounding like the Dead Kennedys doing acid with the nu-metal movement in the Middle East, they were a vital breath of fresh air at a time that Orgy and Out were being touted as bands that could take metal forward. Toxicity is a stonewall classic, the debut too arguably, and the Mesmerize and Hypnotize collections saw them become one of the biggest bands in the game that had respect coming out of every corner of the genre.
The ironic thing about Sonisphere booking Slipknot as their first headliner for 2011 is that at Download 2005, System were set to come of age as headliners but they just couldn’t follow the Iowan juggernaut who played directly before them. There’s no point in fronting on this one at all, in these eyes, Slipknot are one of the finest metal bands to ever grace the genre. Totally worthy of sitting on the pantheons of metal with Maiden, Priest, Metallica and Sabbath, the level of quality and devotion the band have whipped up over the course of the last 11 crazy years has been nothing short of a phenomenon. Faultless in the live environment, yet to release a record that’s anything less than stellar and with a greatest hits collection of tunes that can take on any band you care to mention, Slipknot are one of the best there has ever been. In the wake of the tragic passing of Paul Gray, the amount of emotion that the occasion will bring forth from both the crowd and tens of thousands of rabid maggots can’t even begin to be explained with words. It will be, to boil it down to our lowest common denominator, fucking insane.
There’s a long way to go to see which festival will emerge victorious in the war for battle of the bigger festivals in 2011 but what a start from both camps!

they drop off the sepultura tour after a few northeast dates, so maybe after that?
